I am part of the universe

I saw this over at Secular Dentist and it made me think of a quote by D.H. Lawrence that my lovely partner sent me yesterday.

First, the video.

Next, the quote.

I am part of the sun as my eye is part of me. That I am part of the earth my feet know perfectly, and my blood is part of the sea. There is not any part of me that is alone and absolute except my mind, and we shall find that the mind has no existence by itself, it is only the glitter of the sun on the surfaces of the water. – D. H. Lawrence

This all sits very closely with how I feel about my existence in this universe, and all this is about as close to a universal truth as I think I’ve ever seen. The only thing is I don’t define this as spirituality as such, just a feeling of connectedness with the universe and a knowledge that we are all part of the same gigantic system.

Stumble This!

  1. love your blog! I’m not an atheist though this blog speaks deeply of why I’m not. For me the thought of there being no conciousness larger, more evolved than mine, seems without reason. Of course what that ‘god’ is, is a whole nother journey.

I would love feedback to my own thoughts on the matter at http://leesis.wordpress.com/2010/07/25/are-you-there-god/ and http://leesis.wordpress.com/2010/07/28/are-you-there-god-2/

  2. This video pretty much sums up how I feel (except I prefer strawberry jam).

What believers don’t get is that atheism isn’t a choice…I didn’t just decide one day to ditch god—these conflicts had been simmering inside me since childhood.

I think I know what you mean by not wanting to label it as spirituality, that is an overused word that almost belittles the feelings of connection and awe. Everybody thinks they are spiritual.

Maybe a better word would be respectful.
