James Randi speaks about Carl Sagan

James Randi’s talk about Carl Sagan’s influence is an eloquent and stirring call-to-arms for reason,  rationality and knowledge. It’s great to see one great thinker speak of another great speaker. In it he says:

“Our greatest enemy by far is ignorance. We have the weapons to defeat it, and we a re increasingly able to do so.”

  1. The third message from heaven…

If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

    • Hi Pete, just wondering what your regurgitation of biblical text has to do with Randi and Sagan? Please, you are reposting the same thing you posted the last time you commented on my blog. Simply spraying bible verse around my blog doesn’t add anything to the conversation.

    • Pete, to quote Feynman in his book, Surely You’re joking…, ‘a wugga wugga mugga, a wugga wugga mugga. wugga’.

See, I can write nonsense too!

  2. I believe he was just illustrating this point: “Our greatest enemy by far is ignorance.”

    Managed it with aplomb too.

  3. I absolutely love Carl Sagan. He brought scientific thought to the masses, and made it interesting. I completely agree with James Randi’s assertion that many in the western world are satisfied with mediocrity. Thank goodness we have a few great minds that push scientific theories into the public eye, so that people are less satisfied with mediocrity and truly want to understand the why and how of the universe. As a homeschooler, two of my favorite things to watch with the kids are Carl Sagan and Michio Kaku. Instead of being satisfied with a supernatural force creating the world, they are able to see and understand how the universe works.
