Lawrence Krauss Interview – Prominent People Project

Posted by on November 26, 2010 in Thoughts | 6 comments

This is the fifth in a series of interviews with  people who are prominent in the worlds of atheism, science, skepticism and rational thought.

This interview is the first live audio interview I’ve conducted, with prominent Professor of Physics and theoretical astrophysicist Dr Lawrence Krauss. Most famously known for his lectures on astrophysics, his appearances on TV documentaries such as “How The Universe Works”, and his famous talk “A Universe From Nothing”, introduced by Richard Dawkins.

What drew me to Dr Krauss as a scientific hero is his most famous quotation, a mind-blowing and humbling proposition:

“Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And, the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: You are all stardust. You couldn’t be here if stars hadn’t exploded, because the elements – the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, iron, all the things that matter for evolution and for life – weren’t created at the beginning of time. They were created in the nuclear furnaces of stars, and the only way for them to get into your body is if those stars were kind enough to explode. So, forget Jesus. The stars died so that you could be here today.

Dr Krauss was recently in Melbourne, and we’d planned to meet up, but had some problems with getting in touch with each other, but I was able to catch him for a short interview over Skype. While he was pressed for time (he was here on business, not pleasure), he was able to answer some of my biggest questions, yet I could have picked his brains for hours! He is a charming and extremely intelligent man, and I hope you enjoy this podcast. I will post a transcript of this interview at a later date.

The question actors most often get asked is how they can bear saying the same things over and over again night after night, but God knows the answer to that is, don”t we all anyway; might as well get paid for it….
